Form 2 Week 5

Hi Form 2, and welcome to Week 5 of the course.

We will be finishing the short term causes of the Revolution over the next week or so, especially the events of 1789.

Here is a PowerPoint on the Tennis Court Oath and events leading up to it: goo.gl/XRm34o

In class this week we will write an essay answering the following question:

How important were economic factors in causing the French Revolution?

Some ideas of causes: inequality of rights and privileges of the Three Estates, taxation inequality, living and working conditions of the Third Estate, the absolutist rule of the Bourbon kings, anti-church feeling, the Enlightenment, the Seven Years War, the economic mismanagement of France, government corruption, rise of democratic sentiment in Britain and the Americas...

I'll explain more in class.

Homework:

Your midterm test will take place next Tuesday the 9th of October. It will be a 70 minute test on everything completed in class thus far. There will be some short answers, a timeline section, a source section and one essay.

The relevant study notes can be found here (and also at the Study Notes section on the RHS of the blog):

  1. Sir, with the cahiers de doléances, was there one written for every town or was it per estate because on the note it says it was the estates but in class you said it may have been per town..

    1. One per town. I can understand the confusion - the notes say "Louis XVI ordered the Three Estates to draw up cahiers" but by this I mean he ordered all of society to write cahiers, one for each geographical location. Thanks for pointing it out.
